Everything you need to enjoy your visit to St Albans
How to find us
The church of St Michael where Bacon was buried lies in the centre of St Michael’s Village, to the West of St Albans, one of the most beautiful cities in England. Open daily, people come from all over the world to visit the famous 17th century seated statue of Bacon, carved in the pose of a philosopher contemplating the mysteries of the Divine, and placed beside the high altar.
Situated in Verulamium Park, this is also the gateway to Gorhambury, whose drive is normally open to the public in daylight hours from which Bacon’s house of Old Gorhambury can be seen.
By car
The city is only 25 miles from central London in Hertfordshire. It is easily accessible from the M1 and M25. Visitors arriving by car should aim for Verulamium Car Park (39 St Michael’s St, St Albans AL3 4SW), which is run by the city council. There are many other places to park in the city, with St Michael’s just a 15 minute walk from the High Street.
By train
There are regular Thameslink services from Kings Cross and other London stations to St Albans City Station. St Michael’s Village is about a 30 minute walk from the station, or you can catch the number 302 bus to ‘Hemel Hempstead Railway Station’ from Granville Road, (round the corner to the station). The nearest stop to St Michael’s is called ‘Verulam Temple.’
